Prepaid Electricity Plans in Texas
Prepaid electricity plans (or pay-as-you-go plans) allow you to purchase electricity in advance without a credit check, deposit, or long-term contract. While convenient, they often come at a premium.

How Prepaid Power Works
You fund an account with an initial balance (e.g., $50). As you use electricity, the cost is deducted from your balance daily. You receive text or email alerts when your balance runs low.
If your balance hits zero, your power is disconnected remotely via your smart meter until you add more funds.
The Cost of Convenience
Prepaid plans typically charge significantly higher per-kWh rates than standard fixed-rate contracts. They also frequently include daily administrative fees.
While they are useful for short-term situations or rebuilding credit, they are generally the most expensive way to buy electricity in Texas over the long term.
TDU Delivery Charges
No matter which retail provider you choose, you must pay regulated delivery charges to your local utility. These fees cover grid maintenance and storm restoration.
Need Help?
If you experience a power outage, contact your local TDU directly. Retail providers cannot restore power.
